Situated in the heart of the Caribbean Sea is the beautiful Isla de Margarita, a by-product of the convergence of two peninsulas through an isthmus. This island is the largest of the three islands in the state of Nueva Esparata and is located off the northern coast of Venezuela.
The climate in this island for most part of the year is very sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 38°C.
Isla Margarita was first discovered by Christopher Columbus. In 1498, the local natives welcomed the conquering Spaniards, unaware that the visitors would eventually rule the island. The islanders gained independence from the Spanish in 1814.
The population of Margarita Island is estimated to be over 400,000. Most of the residents dwell in the more developed eastern section of the island, especially in Polamar and Pampatar.
