Los Roques is a group of approximately fifty islands or islets. The Los Roques Archipelago is situated quite close to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. An almost unexplored coral reef, Los Roques attracts many tourists.
For most part of the year, the Los Roques Archipelago is breezy, dry and warm. It usually rains between November and December, but the rainy spells are few and short. The average temperature is approximately 29°C. Hurricanes are rare in the Los Roques islands.
In 1972, owing to its rich aquatic life and a wide variety of seabirds, Los Roques came to be declared as a National Park.
Los Roques is not densely populated. In fact, the islands are occupied by less than 2,000 permanent residents. El Gran Roque is the most important and the only populated island in Los Roques.
