Brazil was under the rule of the Portuguese for three centuries till it gained independence in 1822. But, the country became a republic only in 1889. Brazil was under military rule for more than half a century, till 1985, when civilian rule was finally established. Since then, Brazil has grown to become one the leading economic powers of South America. It is, however, plagued by high income disparity, now posing to be a major obstacle for Brazil’s welfare.
The roots of Brazilian culture lies in that of Portugal. Heavily influenced by the Portuguese, Brazil boasts of a colourful and vibrant culture. Brazilian music has a rich tradition with various styles such as samba, bossa nova, forró, frevo and many others.
Bounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean, Brazil shares its land boundaries with French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. The lowest point of the country is Atlantic Ocean while the highest point is Pico da Neblina.
