El Calafate is a town in Santa Cruz, in the southern part of Argentina. This town with a population of approximately 8,000 inhabitants is named after the bush ‘calafate’ which grows in abundance in the area.
El Calafate is known as the national capital of the glaciers as it is the starting point of most of the glacier circuits in the region.
The climate in this region is dry. The average temperature during summers is 19°C and during winters, 3°C. Strong winds blowing across the region are a common occurrence.
Originally, the town was nothing more than a shelter for wool traders before they moved ahead. After being ‘founded’ less than a century ago, it started developing. But, it was only with the creation of national park and better roads to attract visitors that the village began to grow.
