The Tongariro National Park is famous for its geysers, mud pools and floating pumice rocks. Some of the geothermal sites worth visiting are Orakei Korako, WairakeiValley and Karapiti. The Pureora Forest Park houses some of the rarest wildlife in the world.
Taupo also has a Volcanic Activity Centre where information about local volcanoes is made available. The Regional Museum and Art Gallery has some excellent collections of Taupo’s magnificent history and is worth a visit. The town also boasts of its own version of the Jurassic Park, the Spa Dinosaur Valley, a great place for kids as well as grown-ups.
