Rangiroa, or ‘Far Sky’, is the world’s second largest atoll. Located in the Tuamotu Archipelago, its lagoon is approximately 1600 square kilometres.
With more than 240 motu (islets) separated by more than 100 hoa (small channels) and the incomparable colours of the lagoon, Rangiroa is completely overwhelming.
The atoll has a population of about 2,000 residents. Rangiroa is characterized by a warm tropical climate, with rainfall all round the year and no clearly defined seasons. The months of September and November witness the least amount of rainfall.
All the main government buildings, including the mayor’s office, the post office and the pearl industry research center which includes a mother-of-pearl and pearl culture crafts centre are in Avatoru the main village on the northwest side of the atoll.
