The most attractive thing about Punaauia is its scenic beauty which is unique in itself. One can go out alone or in groups to experience and explore the beauty of the region especially the vanilla plantations.
There is plenty for those interested in history. Punaauia has a number of religious structures called ‘pagan temples’ or marae that are known for their traditional religious practices. The Black Pearl Museum is the only one of its kind in the world, dedicated to pearls. Similarly, the Paul Gauguin Museum has a collection of the works of the famous French artist, Paul Gauguin.
The Heiva Nui Festival, held in July, is a well-known traditional sports festival featuring competitions in stone lifting, javelin throw and copra preparations. For the shoppers, there are several stores selling souvenirs, apparel, cosmetics, food items and a host of other products.
