The Yasawa Group comprises a chain of 20 volcanic islands off the north-western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. The Yasawa Islands have often been described as ‘the most archetypically South Pacific’ islands in all of Fiji because of their miles of untouched, sandy beaches and pristine greenery.
The archipelago comprises six large islands and fourteen smaller ones and spans a total of 135 sq km. A large expanse of barrier reefs is located to the west of the island group. The principal islands in the island group are Yasawa, Nacula, Tavewa, Nanuya Lailai, Matacawa Levu, Naviti, Waya and Kuata.
The island group is home to more than 1,200 residents, in addition to a large transient tourist population. They are also a common halt for cruise liners and have experienced a surge of development in recent years.
