Viti Levu is Fiji’s largest and ‘main’ island, in that a majority of Fiji’s population resides on it. It is the site of the nation’s capital, Suva, and is also the fifth-largest island in Oceania.
Viti Levu has four main regions: Nadi (the site of Fiji’s international airport), Suva, Rakiraki and the Coral Coast. Its geography and topography vary wildly, with rich river valleys to the south and vast sugar plantations to the north and west and also features mountains, volcanic regions and barren, dry land.
Viti Levu lies in the path of the trade winds, which results in the eastern side receiving as much as 100 inches of rainfall a year; however, the western side is generally dry and sunny. The island is home to approximately 600,000 people, who are mainly Indian or indigenous Fijian.
