Vanua Levu, the second largest island of the Fiji archipelago, offers an insight into the traditional Fijian way of life. Only 100 miles long, it is divided horizontally by a mountain range and surrounded by coral reefs.
The main towns are Labasa in the north and Savusavu in the south. Sugar plantations and small Indian communities dot the dry northwestern side, while the southwestern side is covered with rainforest and colonial coconut plantations. The island boasts a tropical climate all through the year.
Vanua Levu is largely a cane growing area with a population of around 130000. It is seldom visited by travellers, which makes this beautiful island an ideal destination for vacationers seeking a natural, unspoilt environment.
