Labasa is a town in the north-eastern part of Vanua Levu—the second largest island of Fiji. The largest town of Vanau Levu, it has a population of approximately 24,000 inhabitants and the only set of traffic lights on the island!
As Labasa lies on the leeward side of the islands it experiences a dry climate compared to the rest of the island. Winter, that is, May to October, is the best time to visit as the climate is pleasant with the average temperature at 18°C to 20°C.
Labasa is located on the delta of three rivers. It is primarily an agrarian community with farming being the main occupation.
Abundance of the sugarcane crop led to it becoming the centre of the sugar industry in the colonial era. The only sugar mill on the island is found here.
