Earlier referred to as Ponape, Pohnpei is an island in the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by a large reef. It is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia and is also the largest and most densely populated of the 600-odd Micronesian islands.
The topography of the island is characterised by a jagged coastline, mangrove swamps, mountains and lush vegetation.
The combination of steep mountains and heavy rainfall results in a number of splendid waterfalls. The island has a humid, tropical climate, and an average temperature of 27°C. January and February are the best months to visit since the rainfall is not as heavy.
The population of about 35,000 tend towards a communal lifestyle, and it is not uncommon to find groups of people engaging in day-to-day activities together
