Salt Lake City, host of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, is the capital of the state of Utah, United States and the seat of Salt Lake County. It is located near the Grand Canyon in a beautiful valley beneath the Wasatch Mountains and is home to approximately 200,000 inhabitants.
The famous Great Salt Lake, which gave the city its name, is located around 24 km from the city.
The city was founded in 18 47 by the religious leader Brigham Young and his group of Mormon Pioneers. Since, the city has evolved into a major religious, commercial as well as tourist centre. The city is the home of the international headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Mormon Tabernacle choir which is famous worldwide.
It is extremely well connected to the rest of the country and is in fact considered to be ‘The Crossroads of the West’.
The city is characterised by a semi-arid climate. The climate of the city is generally dry, although the wetter region of the Wasatch provides for any deficient water supply. Temperatures in summer run between 20°C–30°C, while winter can see temperatures falling below –7°C.
During summers, days are hot and dry, while the nights are relatively cooler. Winters are cold, with intermittent snowfall. The city receives the maximum rainfall in March.
