Providence’s well-preserved Victorian, Colonial and Greek mansions scattered throughout the city give a feeling of the days gone by.
The city is home to an expansive park system, of which the most notable is the Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, holding various concerts and the popular Water Fires on New Year’s Eve. Roger Williams Park, which comprises a zoo and a botanical centre, and the Prospect Terrace Park are also worth visiting.
The East Side of the city includes a huge area of adjacent buildings, all of which are listed on the National List of Historic Places in the US. These include the 1786 John Brown House, the Providence Athenaeum and the First Unitarian Church.
The latter also houses the 1663 Portrait of George Washington which is now used on all American currency.
Rhode Island School of Design Museum and the Providence Public Library also definitely merit a visit. The Fleet Skating Centre has a huge ice rink and is well equipped with facilities for skate rentals, lockers as well as small eats.
The Federal Hill is also called Providence’s Little Italy because of its quaint Italian heritage displayed in its restaurants and cafes. Columbus Day (usually held in October) is celebrated here with parades and outdoor chefs serving authentic Italian cuisine.
