Harlem is a neighborhood in the city of New York which is known as the main African-American business and cultural centre. Earlier associated with poverty and crime, the region is fast developing due to its economic and social renovation.
Harlem has its boundaries stretching from the Hudson River in the east to the frayed limit in the south. There are several important landmarks which are seen at the Harlem including James Bailey House, the Apollo Theatre, City College of New York, Hotel Theresa, the Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Rucker Park, Hamilton Heights, and St. Martin’s Church, Astor Row and more.
The seventies was the worst period for the Harlem as despite the federal government’s efforts to improve public health and sanitation this part of the city remained in the clutches of poverty, showing no sign of improvement.
Today, this area has a large retail and office compound called the Harlem Center and a number of movie theatres, museums and shopping malls.
