Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, USA, is an ancient city with an eventful history. It was founded in 1786 by the General Assembly and received its first charter as a town in 1856. The city continued to develop through the twentieth century and is now an important metropolis and tourist centre.
With a city population of 123,000, Columbia is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. It is famous for its arts, as is evident by the presence of numerous theatres, galleries, art schools as well as the outdoor murals all over the region. Numerous festivals and fiestas are also held periodically, which feature performances from top international stars.
The city is characterised by a continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters. The dry season is between December and March and is the best time to visit.
