San Cristobal de las Casas is located in the temperate highlands of Chiapas State in Mexico. It lies in the lush green Valle de Jovel at an altitude of more than 2,100 m above sea level.
San Cristobal is about 85 km east of Tuxtla Gutierrez, the state capital. It is easier to get to San Cristobal from the capital (the journey by road offers an amazing view) although the city does have a small airport (about 16 km out of the city) offering flights to Mexico City.
The city has a dry, humid climate with average temperatures being around 15°C. Wet summers and cold winters give a temperate feel to the region’s climate.
The population of San Cristobal is estimated to be around 200,000 people. Tourism remains an important commercial activity of this unspoilt paradise with its deep canyons, superb lakes and tall waterfalls.
