Loreto is one of the five tourist cities in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The city used to be the capital of the state until the capital was moved to La Paz, nearly 240 km south, near the Sea of Cortez. Behind Loreto lie the massive Sierra La Giganta Mountains.
The city has nearly 250 km of sandy beaches and turquoise waters with around 14 small islands in the Loreto Bay.
Loreto experiences a dry, desert-type climate with nearly 300 sunny days in a year and average temperatures ranging from 25°C–28°C. The cool sea breezes from the Sea of Cortez alleviate temperatures. Monsoon rains fall mainly in September, while the winter months can be quite windy.
The city has a population of around 10,000 people. Loreto also has one of the region’s only international airports with daily flights to Los Angeles.
