Culiacán is the capital of and the largest city in of the state of Sinaloa in North- Western Mexico. The name ‘Culiacán’ comes from the Náhuatl (indigenous language) word ‘colhuacan’, which means ‘Place where the God Coltzin is worshipped’.
The climate is warm and humid, with an annual average temperature of around 20°C. It is best to avoid travel between June and September, when the rainfall is heavy.
Culiacán has been home to a succession of Indian tribes, and has also remained a Spanish colony, leaving this city with a multicultural atmosphere.
Initially a mining settlement, Culiacán, developed into an agricultural town. Most of the population of 605,000 is employed in agriculture and allied activities. Located in close proximity to other urban centres in the state, it is now a centre of commerce as well.
