Chihuahua City is the capital of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The name ‘Chihuahua’ is a Nahualt (indigenous language) word which means ‘dry sandy zone’, representing the vast desert area in Chihuahua.
It was in Chihuahua that Miguel Hidalgo (considered the Father of Mexico) was imprisoned and executed. Benito Juarez, five-time Mexican President also resided in Chihuahua.
The climate is arid and dry all year round, although rainfall is regular. The annual average temperature is 18°C. Travel can be avoided between June and October, the rainy season.
Invaded by the Spanish and French, Chihuahua was home to native tribes too, giving this city a rich culture. Primarily a mining town during the colonial era, the population of 749,000 mainly works in ‘maquiladoras’, foreign manufacturing facilities.
