Tourist guide Pitlochry

Pitlochry is a delightful town found in the Perthshire Highlands. The scenery around it is among the most beautiful in Europe. Because of its combination of forested hills, lochs and rivers, this Victorian town has been a popular holiday resort for over a hundred years attracting tourists especially in summer when the Pitlochry Festival is on.

The present town is relatively new dating from mid 19th Century. Queen Victoria came for a visit in 1844 and it quickly grew into a famous tourist town. Nearby Moulin has a more ancient history since it became a burgh as early as in 1511.

By the end of the 18th Century, Pitlochry had become a centre of flax growing and home based linen weaving. The Blair Atholl whisky distillery was founded here in 1798. In 1835, the MacNaughton family opened the first water powered wool mills, which produced tweed cloth from raw wool. The first modern highland games also took place here in 1852.
