Inverness is located in the north of Scotland, near the mouth of the River Ness. This town of approximately 55,000 inhabitants is known as the ‘Capital of the Highlands’ as it is the only large town in this region of Scotland.
Inverness enjoys a pleasant climate but summer is the best time to visit: daylight lasts for long periods and the weather is pleasant. During winters, the average temperature is 5°C, but the region may have the occasional snowfall and the wind chill can be severe.
Inverness’ strategic location at the mouth of an important river made it a coveted region from the early days. Different areas of the town were repeatedly fortified. Today, it is an important commercial town on which the other highland villages depend. It is also one of the fastest growing towns in Europe.
