The Scots, in the fifth century, came from their home in Ireland and settled in Scotland. Scotland was a very rich country till its fight for retaining its independence started. England and Scotland were linked by James IV of Scotland who became James I of England. Finally, in 1707, with the twin Act of Union in the Parliament of England and Parliament of Scotland, England and Scotland came together to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.
The culture of Scotland is a result of fusion of various cultures over the course of many centuries. Scottish music is a very important aspect of its culture. The Scottish bagpipes in spite of being a traditional instrument, is still popular and widely used. There has been significant contribution in literature through the works of famous authors and poets like Robert Burns, Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Walter Scott.
Scotland shares its land border with England in the south and has the North Sea in the east, Atlantic Ocean in the west and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west.
