Santiago de Compostela is located in the north-west region of Spain in the province of A Coruña. It is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia.
The climate of the city is typical of the Spanish Atlantic coast with wet winters and frequent rainfall. Rain is experienced even in the summer months, though to a lesser extent. The temperatures are mild with a yearly average of 19ºC. In winters, they may go down to about 8ºC in the month of January.
Santiago de Compostela has a population of approximately 94,000. It is supposed to be the burial place of St James and has been an important pilgrimage site for over a thousand years.
