Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital city of Gran Canaria, Spain. A part of the Canary Islands, the city is situated in the Atlantic Ocean along the north-western coast of Africa. The city has a total population of around 377,000 inhabitants.
The city enjoys an ideal Mediterranean climate, characterised by sunny days and very little rainfall. The period from July to August is the best time to visit the city. The city is said to enjoy the best climate in the world.
Founded in 1478, the city was initially known as ‘Real de Las Palmas’. In 1942, Christopher Columbus stopped on the island on his very first trip to America. Today, the city houses a museum named after him, the Casa Colon.
Tourism is one of the main sectors in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Businesses, fishing and trade also account for a large portion of the economy.
