The foundation stone of Sagrada Familia was laid in 1882 and it is still not complete. The building, designed by Antoni Gaudi, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona. Gaudi died in 1926; at the time, only a façade, a tower, the apse and the crypt were complete. Once completed, the church will have 18 towers and a capacity to house 13,000 people.
The ‘Glory Façade’ which is presently under construction, will display a series of pictures of life and death of humans. The ‘Passion Façade’ is a major attraction as it has sculptures that depict the Crucifixion of Christ.
The Sagrada Familia has a museum which has a collection of stories about Gaudi and the church as well. Tourists can also visit one of the completed towers for a view of Barcelona. |
