Cetinje is located in the southern part of Montenegro. Historically, this town of approximately 15,100 inhabitants served as the capital city; today, it is a sleepy town becoming increasingly popular with visitors.
The city is nestled in a valley amidst the famed Black Mountains, so called owing to the black limestone which makes up the slopes.
Cetinje enjoys a continental climate. Summers are warm and dry with average temperatures at 20°C. This region gets heavy rainfall during spring and autumn; average winter temperatures are 2.1°C.
Cetinje was chosen as the capital because of the natural protection of the surrounding mountains, making it less susceptible to attacks. The building of a monastery here attracted many people to this region as it became the country’s leading spiritual centre.
