Vladivostok, known as the pearl of the Far East, is a Russian city situated close to the border with China and North Korea. It is a terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway (the world’s longest rail line) and is the headquarters of the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet.
Vladivostok is nearly 9,000 km from Moscow by rail. There are also ferries to Japan and Korea, which take around 2 days. The Vladivostok International Airport is located 30 minutes out of the main city area.
It can get quite cold in the city during winter, with temperatures falling as low as –14°C. The weather gets warmer in summer with 25°C being the average. Annual rainfall is about 765 mm.
The city has a population of nearly 600,000 people. The industrial activity of Vladivostok is centred on fishing, shipping and the naval base.
