Romania : Health and Safety

Although the water from the tap is relatively safe, it is better to consume bottled water. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally considered safe to eat. Hepatitis A and tuberculosis are common while hepatitis B is endemic. The rare West Nile Fever outbreaks have been reported in the southeast. Brucellosis occurs sporadically but the risk is low. Stray dogs may carry African Typhus disease. Vaccination against rabies is advisable. If bitten, seeking medical advice should not be delayed.

Medical facilities in Romania are poor and there is a shortage of basic medical supplies and qualified personnel. Health insurance is strongly advised.

Romania is a safe country with low crime levels. Minor crimes like pick pocketing and street scams are common; hence, travellers are advised to be alert in crowded places.
