The city's biggest attraction is the Sandvig Collection at Maihaugen, which
ranks as one of the largest open-air museums in Europe and houses 185 buildings
plus more than 40000 objects. Maihaugen presents a rural society through churches,
homes, farmyards and tools from the Gudbrandsdalen valley, which extends north
from Lillehammer. Only a 10-minute walk from downtown and you are at the Olympic
Park - here we recommend that you visit the Norwegian Olympic Museum in Håkon
Hall and experience Summer and Winter Olympic history, all via modern presentation
techniques. The historical exhibitions reflect the societies the sports were
a part of, also covering major events that have influenced the development of
the Olympic Games. When you are in the Olympic Park, you should also visit Lysgårdsbakkene
Ski Jumping Arena with ski lift and ski jumping tower. Downtown you will find
the Lillehammer art museum, which many argue is the country's leading visual
arts museum with significant works by Norwegian artists such as Gude, Munch,
Werenskiold, Krogh, Nedrum and Weidemann. The Lillehammer Art Museum served
as a cultural venue during the XV11 Olympic Winter Games in 1994.Marvellous
skiing terrain and good, cold winters makes a successful winter holiday. The
Lillehammer mountains, with Nordseter and Sjusjøen, are among northern
Europe's best cross-country skiing resorts and situated about 850 meters above
sea level and 15-20 kilometer from the town centre. They can offer approximately
350 kilometers of skiing and direct trails between Lillehammer, the Hafjell
alpine area and the Olympic trails at the Birkebeineren Skiing Stadium. In the
Lillehammer area you will also find family slopes to demanding Olympic pists.
