The present settlement of Luxembourg had begun around the Luxembourg Castle. This fort had several occupants that include Bourbon, Hasburgs, Hohenzollerns, the French and so forth. During the Belgian Revolution of 1830–39 Luxembourg’s territory was reduced by more than half. It was under the German occupation during the First World War. During the Second World War the country was fighting on the Allies’ side. It has been the founding member of both United Nations (1946) and of NATO (1949).
Luxembourg’s is dominated by the culture of its neighbouring countries. However, it has produced some well known painters, artists, photographers and so forth.
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the world, and it is located in Western Europe between France and Germany. It also shares its borders with Belgium. Its picturesque terrain is dominated by plains, hills, broad and shallow valleys, mountainous regions and so forth. The River Moselle is its lowest point of elevation while Buurgplaatz is the country’s highest point of elevation.
