Westport in County Mayo is one of the few planned towns in Ireland. Located at the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, Westport is close to the tourist destinations of Connemara, Achill, Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.
This town experiences a warm temperate climate with temperature variations through the day.
The town was originally founded as the village of Cathair na Mart and was moved to the present site in the 1780s by the Browne family. The modern-day town was planned and laid out by James Wyatt, a famous English architect. The townspeople traditionally known as Coveys, take pride in their ‘tidy little town’.
Agriculture is still the main source of employment in this county, which has a population of about 6,600 people. Apart from this, manufacturing, engineering and tourism are also important.
