Europeans had discovered Greenland only by the tenth century. It was discovered by the Icelandic and the Norwegian Vikings prior to which it was home to the Arctic people. Denmark began colonizing it in the eighteenth century, and made it an integral part in 1953. It became a part of the European Community, staying under Denmark, in 1973. Greenland was however granted self-governance in 1979, and it ultimately became free in 1980.
People in Greenland are very hospitable to the visitors. They are peace loving and warm. The arts and craft of this place are very unique, and it reflects the feelings of the simple people of the country. The tupilaks, figures carved out on walrus tooth, are a special form of art (and now the most important souvenir) in the country. Hunting is an important part of their culture and most of them still practise it part time.
The country is located in the northern part of North America between Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. Greenland is the largest island on earth, and almost 85% of it covered with snow. Its terrain is basically flat with barren and rocky lands and a stretch of coastal plains. Gunnbjorn is the point of highest elevation in Greenland.
