Thessaloniki, or Salonica, is located in the northern part of Greece. This city of approximately 352,000 inhabitants is an important trading port for the country and a busy industrial area.
This port city enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Spring and autumn is the best time to visit as the average temperature is 18°C. In the peak of summer, the temperatures tend to rise above 30°C.
Thessaloniki was on an important trade route during the Middle Ages, and thus, it was a huge asset for the Roman Empire; it flourished rapidly. Despite invasions and even a mammoth earthquake, the city continued to prosper till the early twentieth century, until a massive fire destroyed more than three-quarters of the city. The next few years saw the city being restored to its former glory.
