In medieval times Piraeus was known as Porto Leone, the name was given because
of the enormous stone lion, which guarded the harbor’s entrance.
Since its creation Piraeus has always had a connection with the sea because
of its three natural ports.
The central harbor which is touched by cargo and passenger ships has an important
and constant going and coming of goods and people from around the world.
The population of the demos (municipality of Piraeus) counts about 175,697 inhabitants,
while the monarchy of Piraeus which includes also the surrounding land and some
of the islands of the Saronic Gulf has a population of about 541,504 people.
