The harbour of Parikia is the gateway to the Cyclades islands. It is home to one of the country’s finest cathedrals from the Byzantine era, Panayia Ekatondapiliani Cathedral. The impressive dome and the altar screen are the best features of the cathedral. Its museum displays an extensive range of religious relics and other articles.
A little away from Parikia is the ‘Valley of Butterflies’; it can be reached by bus or for a medieval feel, hire a mule. The butterflies have been coming to this valley for the past 300 years. But, they can be seen in large groups only in June.
Naoussa is the island’s resort area with numerous hotels and some of the best beaches. It hosts the World Cup Windsurfing Championship every year. Lefkes, a charming village in the interiors, has maintained the feel of a medieval village with most of its original buildings and streets still intact.
