Paros is one of the islands of the Cyclades group which is located in the southern part of Greece. This island is home to around 12,800 inhabitants, most of who live in the capital and the main harbour, Parikia, while others live in the smaller villages.
Paros has a pleasant climate all through the year. The winters are mild with average temperatures at 14°C and the occasional rain. Summers are quite warm with the average temperature at 27°C; ‘Meltemi’ a cool northern wind which blows over the island during summer brings the much needed respite from the heat.
The single peak of Mount Profitis Elias rises in the centre of the island. Paros owes its early prosperity to the large quantities of marble found in this mountain. Known as the Parian marble, it was in great demand by sculptors in Greece and was exported for many centuries.
