Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. The prefecture of Kefalonia includes the islands of Ithaca, Kastos and Kalamos.
The island is covered with dense vegetation and has a mountainous terrain. The tallest mountain is Mount Ainos which has an elevation of 1628 m.
Kefalonia, like most of the Ionian Islands, has a Mediterranean climate. Winters are rainy and mild with temperatures rarely falling below 8°C, and summers are hot and dry with an average temperature of 22°C.
Kefalonia has a population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants. The inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture, cattle-raising, fishing, shipping and tourism. Agriculture is dominated with vineyards and olives, though the production of citrus fruits and vegetables is also carried out on a small scale.
