Ithaca is an island belonging to the Ionian Islands group in the Ionian Sea, Greece. It is not very large with an approximate area of 96 sq km.
The island of Ithaca is mountainous with the highest peak being Mount Nirito. Even the coastline is steep and rocky, although Ithaca does have beautiful sandy and pebbly beaches. It has a mild Mediterranean climate which has dry, hot summers and rainy, mild winters. The average temperature in summers is about 27°C, whereas it rarely falls below 0°C in winters.
Ithaca has a population of about 3,000 inhabitants with most of it concentrated in the capital city of Vathy. Due to its moderate climate, the island is covered with lush green forests. Olives are abundant on the island and the villages produce good quality olive oil and wine. Many of the inhabitants of Ithaca are sailors by profession.
