Gythion is a town in the prefecture of Laconia, Greece. It is the largest town in Mani and is part of the Peloponnese region. Before it was destroyed by an earthquake, Gythion was an important port for many centuries.
The town has a typical marine climate which is warm and humid. The temperatures easily cross 30°C in summers, whereas they rarely fall below 10°C in winters. Gythion is connected to the mainland by a dam which serves as a protection against the sea.
Gythion has a population of about 4,300 people. It is a picturesque town full of pine trees and has a view of the Pamon mountain range in the east and Teygetos in the west.
