The summer season sees a lot of festivities and events being held throughout Greece. One of the most important is the summer Hellenic Festival, under which falls many other events like the Athens Festival and the Epidaurus Festival (celebrating both theatre and music).
The city of Thessaloniki hosts many festivities of its own, including the Thessaloniki Book Fair in May and the International Thessaloniki Film Festival which is held in November.
Carnival is a three-week festive period before the fasting period of Lent that takes place throughout Greece. The most famous Carnival takes place at Patras and starts by 17 January. Masquerades, floats and costumes are some common sights during this festival.
The Easter season is also a time for celebrations with plenty of fireworks, colourful eggs and roasted lamb to go around.
