Ephesus was once an important Greek city in Ionia in Asia Minor. It lies to the south of the modern district of Selçuk, in present-day Turkey.
Ephesus has a warm climate with an average temperature of about 30°C.
Founded in the tenth century BC as an Attic-Ionian colony, the city of Ephesus was an important center for early Christianity. Saint Paul is believed to have preached here. The ruins of Ephesus excavated since 1869 reveal the historic significance of this ancient city. It was also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The population of Ephesus in the early centuries is believed to have been around 2,25,000. This city was burnt down by the Goths in 262 AD; after which, it never quite recovered to its former glory despite being an important centre of trade and commerce in the later centuries.
