The Palaio Frourio is an old Venetian fortress now used for cultural events such as concerts and the atrical productions.
At the central point of the citadel is an observation post with a huge crucifix at its summit. Below this lies St. George's church, in classical Greek architectural style adorned with Doric columns.
Near the old Venetian Citadel are also two large squares, ‘Ano Plateia’ and ‘Kato Plateia’ with park lawns and interesting buildings such as a Roman-style rotunda from the time of the British Protectorate, where the local Philharmonic orchestra plays.
Cricket matches are also held here, another legacy of the British.
The Neo Frourio (New Fortress) is a giant maze of fortified structures in the north-eastern part of the city. It is now open to the public and tours take place in the complex of medieval corridors and fortifications.
Just to the North of ‘Kato Plateia’ are the ‘Palaia Anaktora’ (‘Old Palaces’), an area of Romano buildings once a residence of the King of Greece. Today they are home to art exhibits including a Museum of Chinese Art.
The Palace Gardens with, trees flowers and ponds overlook the bay and are a place to relax and sample Greek coffee and ‘ouzo’ at the café.
