Kreuzberg is one of the poorest areas of the country, but has an interesting cosmopolitan feel and is a melting pot of cultures. Before 1990, almost the entire the town was surrounded by the Berlin wall. The most interesting spot in the area is ‘Checkpoint Charlie’. It was one of the checkpoints used to cross from the east to the west. Today, a replica of the checkpoint booth has been constructed at the point; a private museum also stands there.
Augustrasse, a street lined with numerous art galleries, and Oranienstrasse, housing restaurants and bars serving many international culinary delights, are the most popular spots for tourists and locals alike. Kreuzberg also has many museums and churches and several busy squares.
Though Kreuzberg has now become a commercial centre with many young professionals making it their home, it has retained its original ghetto feel which attracts visitors.
