Most of Altstadt (old town) was destroyed in World War II, but Rathaus, the Renaissance-styled town hall, and St. Petri church are worth a visit. The tower of the St. Michaelis’ church is ideal for a panoramic view of the entire city. This ornate church is also home to tombs of some of Hamburg’s famous citizens.
There are several parks in the city, the largest amongst them being Wallringpark. It is a leisure park with recreational activities, greenhouses, nature walks and even Europe’s largest Japanese garden.
A visit to Hamburg must include a cruise, in the canals in Altstadt or along the Alster River or around the Harbour, for a view of the city and its surrounding areas.
Wilkomm Hoft (welcome point), in Wedel which is a little away from the city, is the place where approaching ships catch the first sight of Hamburg. A station here welcomes each ship in its national language and plays its national anthem.
