Düsseldorf, in the western part of Germany, is one of the wealthiest cities in the country. This city of approximately 581,000 inhabitants is divided into two by the River Rhine the old, medieval town and the new commercial hub.
Düsseldorf has a typically coastal climate largely influenced by its nearness to the Atlantic Ocean. From May to September the average temperature stays above 20°C, rising to 25°C in July and August. Winters are harsh.
Düsseldorf began as a fishing settlement along the swamps of the River Rhine. Over the centuries, it developed into a city thriving in both commerce and art and culture. World War II left the city almost completely destroyed. The city was rebuilt and special attention was given to planned growth.
