The construction of the Berlin Wall began on 13 August 1961, a move by the German Democratic Republic to prevent those fleeing from East Berlin to enter the West. It was initially a fence of barbed wires; the concrete wall was constructed only later, in 1965. It is the site of some bitter incidents where almost a hundred people were shot dead while attempting to cross the wall.
The demolition of the wall was announced on 9 November 1989; it was completed in 1991. This demolition marks the economic and political reunification of Germany, which is a significant event in world history. Remains of the wall were sold as souvenirs or donated officially to museums. The historical importance attached to it makes it an important tourist attraction. |
