Tartu, in south Estonia, is a town rich in culture and heritage. Apart from its approximately 100,000 inhabitants, the town is also home to international students. It is also a popular venue for summits and conferences and is a stopover for most visiting foreign dignitaries.

Summer in Tartu is pleasant with temperatures ranging from approximately 18ºC to 22ºC. There are also persistent showers during summer. Winters are severe with temperatures close to 0ºC and heavy snowfall.

During the Middle Ages, Tartu was an important member of the trade guilds of the Baltic region. In the eighteenth century, fire destroyed most of the city. After it was rebuilt, Tartu hosted several music, art and theatre festivals, and was, thus established as a centre of learning and culture.
