Bornholm is located to the east of Denmark in the Baltic Sea. Owing to its strategic position in the Baltic area, both for trade and military purposes, Bornholm became the bone of contention between Denmark, Germany, and Sweden.
Bornholm enjoys a climate quite unique from the rest of Denmark. Winters are comparatively mild; rainfall, scant. With summers extending well into September and temperatures averaging 17°C, the island benefits from a prolonged tourist season.
Though the five to seven hour journey by ferry makes Bornholm a little inconvenient to reach, the island is packed with approximately 450,000 tourists in the summer.
Farming, fishing, glass-making and pottery are the source of income to most of its 43,000 inhabitants. Over the years, tourism has also started playing a pivotal role in the island’s economy.
