Protaras, in south-eastern Cyprus, is a coastal town in the Greek-controlled southern half of the island. What was once scrubland and sand has now been described as looking more like Las Vegas than a Mediterranean beach resort.
The summers here, as with the rest of the island, are hot and dry. The Mediterranean climate makes for warm and wet winters. Spring, with temperatures around 24°C is the best time to visit Protaras.
With a population of around 500, Protaras’s economy thrives on tourism. While several of the locals are unhappy with the glitzy image of the town, most of them are employed in tourist related services.
